Timelines for milestone, Camunda replacement

Hi,

We are seeing the possibilities to replace camunda with zeebe in our production.

  1. Can you please let us know when the milestone 2, 3 and 4 would be complete for zeebe. Please let us
    know rough timelines.

  2. The APIs characteristics of camunda, will it be same in zeebe, meaning can we port our camunda based implementation to zeebe without any change. If there will be change, how much change will be there in our application.

Hi Raja Guru, thanks for the questions.

First, regarding milestones (referencing this doc, for anyone reading along): milestone 2 is complete, milestone 4 is targeted for Q1-2019, and milestone 3 is likely to come in Q2-2019 or later.

Second, regarding migration from Camunda BPM to Zeebe: in comparing the two systems, the points that Daniel and Thorben mentioned in this thread still holds true: Understanding Zeebe. The Quickstart should help give you a sense of the Zeebe API, and it would make sense to take a look at the Quickstart again in mid-October after we’ve released Zeebe 0.12 (which includes a handful of conceptual changes). We don’t yet have an official “migration guide” for Camunda BPM users, but this is something we’ll need to put together in some form as well.

Hi @wints,

Are you really changing the milestone order, so that milestone 4 (expanded bpmn support) comes before milestone 3 (production readiness)?

Or is this a typo?

Hi @bkcsfi, we’re working on both milestones simultaneously right now (rather than one after the other), and it’s more likely that we complete the milestone 4 work before the milestone 3 work. That said, the roadmap should be updated with more detail, especially around “production readiness”, and we’ll be sure to do that at the start of the next quarter in October–more to come soon.

Hi We are also thinking through what it would take migration from camunda to Zeebe. Is DMN supported in zeebe?
This is no more available - https://github.com/zeebe-io/zeebe/blob/develop/ROADMAP.md

Can you please provide pointers on how to go about migration, whats the support provided etc?

Hi Sara, Zeebe does not support DMN at the moment. There is this: https://github.com/zeebe-io/zeebe-dmn-worker

There is no answer to this question. Part of deciding whether Zeebe is right for you is to get across what it does and does not support for you particular use-case in detail, and test it. If you don’t have time to do that, it is not the right time for you to migrate. You will be best waiting until others have done it and you can read “Our experience migrating from Camunda to Zeebe” type articles, and “How to migrate from Camunda to Zeebe” guides.

Where we are now is at the point where people will do the work to discover that. So if you are addicted to the future, dive in.
