Question about pools and lanes. I have read in various sources that some people enter the name of the process or the name of the organization in pools. What exactly should be entered in the pools? In lanes, I know that you enter the roles of the users, such as financial officer, applicant, or application reviewer. Did I understand correctly regarding pools and lanes?
Hi @anon64962691,
It depends. From an organizational perspective, the org name in the Pool describes who is responsible for the process.
If you have many processes in your organization, every process will get the same label in the pool, which makes it harder to distinguish the processes.
Now the process name is a better fit than the name of the organization.
There is no right or wrong.
Hope this helps, Ingo
Oh, I see. I didn’t know that there are different definitions. So, for example, you could write “order processing” in the pool, and within the pool, there are two lanes, such as “customer” and “warehouse worker.” Is this correct?
Hi @anon64962691,
it is possible.
But to confuse you more: I would not put the customer in the lane of a pool, because as a company that runs the process, you cannot control your customer. It’s mostly an independent party which should be modeled in a separate pool and use message flows to show the communication between vendor and customer. The Tasks in a lane are controlled by the participant.
You can find an example in the BPMN 2.0 Training with Customer and Pizza delivery service.
Hope this helps, Ingo
Thank you so much.
