Why is there no support to search for candidate groups and candidate users in the configured external identity provider? This will make it easier for low-code developers to select the right group or user with ease and accuracy.
Hi @devmsaleh,
Great question! You’ve identified a legitimate gap in the current Camunda Modeler functionality.
Current State:
Currently, Camunda Modeler does not provide search or autocomplete functionality for candidate groups and candidate users from external identity providers (like LDAP or Active Directory). When modeling user tasks, you need to manually enter the exact group or user identifiers that correspond to your external IdP configuration.
The workflow today is:
- Coordinate with your LDAP/AD administrators to get the exact group/user names
- Manually enter these identifiers in the Modeler’s candidate groups/users fields
- The enforcement and mapping happens at runtime via your Camunda deployment’s authentication setup
Why This Feature Would Be Valuable:
Your point about improving the experience for low-code developers is spot-on. Having search/autocomplete functionality would:
- Reduce errors from typos in group/user names
- Improve developer productivity
- Make the modeling experience more user-friendly
- Ensure accuracy when selecting the right groups/users
Next Steps - Feature Request:
Since this appears to be a new feature request, I’d recommend submitting it through one of these channels:
-
For complex features like this: Submit to the Camunda Roadmap Portal where the product team can evaluate it alongside other feature requests
-
For a more technical discussion: Open an issue on the Camunda Modeler GitHub repository
When submitting your request, consider including:
- Your specific use case and environment setup
- The types of external IdPs you’re using (LDAP, Active Directory, etc.)
- How this would improve your development workflow
- Any alternative solutions you’ve considered
This would be a valuable enhancement for organizations using external identity providers with Camunda!
