The docs indicate that Pools are Supported, but there is no documentation about it.
Looking at examples and Modeler properties, it appears that Pool support is different processes in the same BPMN file?
But there is no support for Lanes from a execution perspective. Correct?

You are correct. When you use model pools, the modeler will create a bpmn collaboration diagram which in turn is interpreted by the process engine as separate processes.
Lanes do not have any meaning from an execution perspective like swimlanes had in jbpm for example.
